Deaf 6-year-old boy deported with family to Colombia, attorney says - Los Angeles Times
When the administration took power, the justification for their mass deportation apparatus was repeated endlessly.
They were going to target “violent criminals.” They promised to protect the public. Instead, the reality of this regime’s intentional heartless machine was put on full display this month. Immigration agents did not target a cartel boss. They targeted a mother who fled to the U.S. to escape gang violence, and her two young children.
Worst of all, they targeted her 6 year old deaf son, ripping him from the only world he knew and plunging him into a terrifying silence.
The Cruelty is the Point
This was not a mistake or a bureaucratic oversight. It was a calculated deliberate act of cruelty. When the mother and her boys, aged 5 and 6, showed up for a routine ICE check in in San Francisco, they were detained. Outside the building, a desperate relative stood holding the 6 year old’s assistive hearing devices, the critical medical equipment he relies on to interact with the world.
Agents refused to let the child have them. They deported a disabled child without his hearing.
To ensure no one could stop this, the agency intentionally misled the family’s legal advocates. They gave attorneys the runaround, claiming the family was being sent to a detention center in Louisiana, then Washington state. In reality, they were hiding them in Phoenix just long enough to bypass due process and force them onto a plane to Colombia. They denied this family their legal rights by burying them in the shadows of their own system.
Ripping Away a Child’s World
Before this administration’s dragnet caught him, this little boy was thriving. He was a student at the California School for the Deaf, finally learning American Sign Language and building a foundation for his future in a safe supportive community.
By deporting him to a country his mother fled in fear for their lives, the regime did not just exile him. They attempted to erase his ability to communicate, learn, and grow. They stripped a child of his sound, his education, and his basic humanity, all to tally another number on a deportation quota. This is the “worst of the worst” in action: a government that views the suffering of a disabled kindergartener as a political victory.
Returning His Sound, Fighting for His Home
Despite the absolute worst this machine could throw at them, there is pushback. “My team returned his sound. We fought through the red tape, the borders, and the cruelty to ensure this little boy got his hearing equipment back. But returning his sound is not enough when you have been exiled to a place of danger, stripped of your school, your teachers, and the life you were building. Restoring his hearing was only the first step. Now the real battle begins. We are fighting to bring this family home to California, where they belong. The lies of this administration have been laid bare. They are not protecting anyone by terrorizing a 6 year old deaf child. We will not stop until this cruelty is reversed and this family is safe.”
