January 30, 2026
On December 31, 2025, while the rest of Los Angeles looked toward the hope of a new year, 43-year-old Keith Porter Jr. was killed outside his home at the Village Pointe Apartments. The man who pulled the trigger was his neighbor, off-duty ICE agent Brian Palacios.
In the weeks since, the federal government has attempted to scrub Keith’s humanity away, replacing the image of a loving father and devoted son with the cold, sterile label of “suspect.”
“Keith Porter Jr.: A father, a fisherman, and a pillar of his family. We refuse to let his story be reduced to a police report.”
Deconstructing the ICE Narrative of “Self-Defense”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) quickly labeled this an “active shooter” situation to shield their agent. But the facts gathered by family, witnesses, and civil rights attorney Lee Merritt suggest a calculated escalation by Palacios rather than a desperate act of self-defense.
Celebration vs. Threat: Keith was engaging in a New Year’s tradition of celebratory gunfire—not targeting his neighbors.
A Calculated Confrontation: Palacios didn’t just react; he prepared. Reports indicate he donned tactical gear and body armor before leaving his apartment to confront Keith.
The Post-Shooting Reality: After the shots were fired, Palacios reportedly stopped to retrieve his body armor. For a man claiming he feared for his life, this level of tactical maintenance suggests he was operating with a sense of impunity, not a sense of mortal peril.
The Shield of Impunity: Protecting a Dangerous Agent
The most painful detail for the Porter family is that Brian Palacios remains on active duty. While the LAPD initially shielded his identity, court records from a separate custody dispute revealed a profile of an agent who should never have been carrying a badge:
A Pattern of Alleged Bigotry: Filings detail a history of racist comments toward Black and Latino people and the use of homophobic slurs.
History of Domestic Violence: The documents include allegations of Palacios physically abusing his own sons.
Court-Ordered Restrictions: Despite existing court orders restricting his contact with children, ICE allowed Palacios to remain armed and operational within his community.
“Brian Palacios: The ICE agent identified in court filings as the shooter. Despite a history of alleged abuse and racism, he has not been charged.”
Restoring the Man, Demanding the Truth
Keith Porter Jr. was a “jack-of-all-trades” worker and a man who lived for his two daughters, ages 10 and 20. The attempt to assassinate his character in the media is a second tragedy the family refuses to accept.
We stand with the Porter family in demanding the immediate release of any surveillance footage and the prosecution of the agent who took Keith’s life.
How to Support the Fight
The community has stepped up to support Keith’s daughters, but the legal battle for accountability is just beginning.
