THE DEPORTATION MACHINE KILLS AGAIN: JUSTICE FOR LORENZO
07.08.2026
Yesterday morning, the deportation machine claimed another life. ICE agents conducting a targeted enforcement operation in Houston shot and killed 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national who had built his life in this country for nearly 35 years.
Instead of transparency or accountability, we are being spoon-fed the exact same tired, fabricated narratives. ICE claims Lorenzo “weaponized his vehicle,” attempting to run over an officer and ramming into cars.
Sound familiar? It should. This is the exact boilerplate lie they used to justify the murder of Renee Good, and the shootings of Marimar Martinez, Luis Niño-Moncada, and Yorlenys Zambrano-Contreras before they were definitively proven to be lying. The pattern is violently clear: shoot first, invent a vehicular assault later. Skepticism isn’t just warranted here; it is an absolute necessity.
Who Lorenzo Really Was
Lorenzo was not a threat; he was a father, a husband, and a hardworking construction worker. When ICE opened fire on him, he was simply picking up his employees for the workday.
According to his son, Lorenzo had been in the United States for over three decades and was already in the process of obtaining his legal status. “My father did not deserve this,” his son said. Now, a wife and three sons have had their world completely shattered by state-sanctioned violence.
We Cannot Trust DHS to Investigate Itself
The FBI claims they are investigating the “potential assault on a federal law enforcement agent,” and the DHS Inspector General is supposedly looking into the fatal shooting. Let’s be unequivocally clear: we have zero reason to trust that these agencies will be transparent, objective, or honest. They protect their own.
We need a real, independent inquiry. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has rightfully called for an investigation by the city, and we must echo that demand until it is impossible to ignore. We need answers, and DHS will not give them to us voluntarily.
Take Action Now
🗣️ Demand Local Accountability
We must pressure Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare to launch a full, independent probe into what really happened yesterday morning. His office must step in to uncover the truth and aggressively prosecute any agents who committed crimes under the color of law. A badge is not a license to kill.
Harris County Leadership
These officials oversee county-wide law enforcement and local government operations, including coordination (or refusal to coordinate) with federal immigration enforcement.
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo
As the chief executive of Harris County, Hidalgo heads the Commissioners Court and has a history of clashing with federal immigration policies. She is a prime target to echo LULAC’s demands for a local inquiry.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez
Gonzalez oversees the largest sheriff’s office in Texas. He has previously spoken out against certain ICE detainment policies and has the platform to demand transparency regarding federal operations occurring in his county.

City of Houston Leadership
The City of Houston controls the local police department (HPD), which almost always secures perimeters or conducts parallel investigations when federal agents fire their weapons within city limits.
Mayor John Whitmire
The Mayor has direct authority over the Houston Police Department’s involvement in the aftermath of the shooting and can apply immense political pressure for an independent, city-led probe.

Houston City Council (At-Large)
Engaging at-large members who represent the entire city is a strategic way to force the issue onto the council’s agenda, forcing the mayor to address it publicly.
Council Member Julian Ramirez (At-Large 1): atlarge1@houstontx.gov
Council Member Willie Davis (At-Large 2): atlarge2@houstontx.gov
Strategic Action Plan
When you reach out, don’t just ask for “an investigation.” Demand three specific actions:
Publicly back LULAC’s call for an independent, city/county-led inquiry outside of the DHS Inspector General.
Release any local police records, 911 calls, or bodycam footage from HPD or Harris County deputies who responded to the scene. ICE agents often don’t wear bodycams, so local footage is critical to disputing the “weaponized vehicle” narrative.
Suspend any local task force cooperation with ICE until a transparent account of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s death is provided.
💵 Support the Family
LULAC has organized a GoFundMe to provide immediate financial support for Lorenzo’s grieving wife and three sons as they navigate this unimaginable, preventable tragedy. Stand in solidarity with his family and
donate to Lorenzo’s memorial fund here.
We cannot let them sweep another life under the rug. Speak up, demand action, and hold this system accountable.
