Systemic Cruelty: The Intentional Trapping of Gabriela Sousa

The current immigration crackdown in the United States is not a matter of simply enforcing laws.

It is a system designed to be deliberately cruel, aggressively tearing apart legally married families and punishing them for bureaucratic technicalities. For Broward County resident Brandon Garrison and his Venezuelan wife, Gabriela Sousa, the American dream has been weaponized against them, leaving them trapped in a cycle of intentional punishment.

Gabriela arrived in the U.S. legally in 2023 under a humanitarian parole program, which allowed her to live and work temporarily. Knowing her authorized status came with a strict expiration date, the couple married. They logically assumed that marrying a U.S. citizen would secure her future and allow her to adjust her status. Instead, the system used that expiring clock as a trap. Marrying a citizen does not automatically grant a person the legal right to stay once their initial parole window closes.

The Injustice of Her Detention

The most glaring and vindictive element of Gabriela’s case is that she is currently sitting in an immigration detention center in Jacksonville, locked away five hours from her husband, despite having a completely clean criminal record.

Months after their wedding, Gabriela was arrested following a domestic dispute. Brandon explicitly stated it was a misunderstanding, and court records confirm that the State Attorney’s office completely dropped the case. It was marked “DECLINE CASE” and “NO INFO.”

In any rational legal system, dropped charges mean you go home. But under the current brutal enforcement tactics, local arrests are routinely used by ice as a convenient pretext to trigger detainers. Even when local courts clear a person completely, ice absorbs them into the immigration detention machine. Gabriela has been moved from facility to facility like property for the past five months, punished simply because her humanitarian parole had expired.

Forced to Flee Under Threat

Gabriela is not fighting a criminal conviction. She is being crushed by a broken calendar and an unyielding bureaucracy.
Her legal counsel, Saman Movassaghi Gonzalez, is now encouraging her to accept “voluntary departure.” This is not a choice made freely. It is an act of coercion. If she attempts to fight for her right to stay and a judge rules against her, she faces a formal removal order and a mandatory ten year ban from the United States. To avoid that decade of forced exile, her only viable option is to deport herself. The system forces her to banish herself to avoid an even harsher punishment.

Selling Everything for an Uncertain Future

With the government intentionally blocking any path to save his wife from deportation, Brandon is now systematically dismantling his life in Florida. Footage shows him preparing to sell his boats and personal belongings. He is sacrificing his own established life to follow his wife out of the country because his own government refuses to let them live together.

The couple plans to relocate to Colombia, but they are immediately running into the walls of a second rigid system. Moving to Colombia requires its own extensive approval process for residency and work permits, a bureaucratic hurdle that could take months to clear.
Brandon and Gabriela are left entirely in limbo. They have been effectively exiled by the United States over a technicality, forced to wait for permission from a foreign government just to be allowed to exist together as a family. This is not justice. It is a system working exactly as designed to inflict maximum pain.
