South Burlington, Vermont: After a Harrowing SWAT-Style Raid and Peaceful Protest Met With Brutality, They Are Free!

VICTORY IN VERMONT

SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT - This is what happens when communities fight back. On Monday, March 16, 2026, a federal judge ordered the immediate release of 31-year-old Ecuadorian asylum seeker Jisella Johana Patin Patin after armed ICE agents unlawfully stormed her home without a valid warrant for her arrest.

Timeline of Events

The entire sequence unfolded over just six days and showed both the power of peaceful resistance and the dangers of unchecked federal overreach.

Wednesday, March 11 - The Raid Begins
ICE agents arrived at a home on Dorset Street in South Burlington. They were carrying a search warrant for a man who did not live there and was not present. Instead of correcting the mistake and leaving, agents forced their way inside. They detained Johana - a University of Vermont worker, dedicated community volunteer, and mother of two young daughters - along with her sister and another community member.

The Peaceful Protest Starts
Neighbors and supporters gathered immediately outside the home. The protest remained completely peaceful at first. People formed a human blockade at the door, held signs, and chanted for justice. They stood firm for hours without any violence, simply refusing to let the agents leave with Johana until the situation was addressed in court.

Escalation by DHS and Local Police
As the peaceful blockade continued, DHS and ICE called in reinforcements. Local Vermont police arrived in full riot gear. Officers deployed flash bangs and chemical irritants to break up the crowd and clear the area. The standoff turned tense and confrontational, with police pushing back against the non-violent protesters who were simply protecting their neighbor.

Monday, March 16 - Courtroom Victory
In federal court, U.S. District Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford stepped in. He bypassed the usual immigration court system entirely. The judge ruled there was every reason to release Johana without further delay. He made it clear that the unlawful nature of the detention was not really contestable and pointed directly to violations of Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures.

Johana walked free that afternoon into the arms of her family and a cheering crowd of more than 100 supporters chanting Johana, we love you!

The Fight Continues
Johana is safely home with her two young daughters today. However, her sister and the third community member detained during the raid are still in custody. Advocates are keeping the pressure on for their release and demanding full accountability for the ICE operation and the aggressive tactics used by DHS and local police.

This case shows both the human cost of aggressive immigration enforcement and the real strength that comes when Vermonters stand together. Local organizers are calling for complete transparency into the raid and stronger protections for asylum seekers and mixed-status families.
