You make one small misstep: a name that doesn’t match perfectly because of marriage or a court change, a visa that expired while stuck in endless processing backlogs, a clerical error from when you first filled out the form years ago. SNAP. The snare closes. No dramatic takedown, no helicopters, no guns drawn. Just the slow, relentless tightening while you’re on shift mopping trauma rooms, turning bedridden patients to prevent sores, serving mea the cafeteria, fixing leaks so the hospital stays open. You’re the one keeping the city breathing at 3am, and they’re treating you like prey in their organized hunt.
January 8, 2026. DHS serves the subpoena on Hennepin Healthcare, Minnesota’s primary safety-net hospital, the place that treats the poor, the uninsured, refugees, undocumented families, the people the rest of the system ignores. They demand every single I-9 employment eligibility record. Over 7,000 workers’ full personal information handed over: home addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, passports, driver’s licenses, work authorizations - everything now sitting in a federal database, ready for the next step in the hunt. This comes right after ICE agents were already in the hospital halls, shackling patients to beds, triggering protests, standoffs, and lawmakers forcing their way in to demand they leave.
The administration got a short extension to comply, then folded. They cited the threat of massive fines, civil penalties, even criminal charges if they resisted. They chose protecting the hospital’s budget over protecting the workers who actually make the place function - the housekeepers scrubbing blood off floors, the CNAs providing daily care, the kitchen staff ensuring patients eat, the maintenance teams keeping the building from falling apart. Migrant workers who show up every day, pay taxes they can never claim refunds on, and hold the entire operation together.
This is the hunting party fully exposed. Operation Metro Surge has flooded Minnesota with thousands of federal agents since late 2025, always sold as targeting the “worst of the worst” - violent criminals, gang members, national security threats. But at Hennepin Healthcare? The targets are everyday essential workers. DHS runs those I-9 records through their systems, flags anything labeled “suspect documents”: mismatched names, expired stamps caught in backlog hell, old typos or discrepancies from a decade ago. One flag triggers the formal Notice of Suspect Documents. Deportation proceedings start rolling. No violent crime. No threat to anyone. Just the “crime” of working to survive in a country that relies on your labor.
The whole “public safety” narrative is propaganda. An I-9 audit is not targeted enforcement - it’s a broad dragnet designed to generate fear. The goal is to make you panic, quit your job overnight, pack up, disappear, self-deport before they even have to file formal proceedings. That saves them time, money, court dates, resources. It’s efficient hunting.
But you are not helpless. You have rights they are required to follow, and you can use them to make the hunt fail.
DHS cannot fire you or deport you just because your name appears flagged in an audit. They must issue the formal Notice of Suspect Documents (or Notice of Inspection Results) first. That opens your legal window - typically 8 to 10 federal business days - to correct the issue. Gather proof: marriage certificates, court-ordered name changes, updated work authorizations, any documents that resolve the discrepancy. Use every single day of that window. Stay on the job. Clock in as usual. Force them to go through every layer of their own red tape. Drag it out. Make the process costly and slow for them. Don’t hand them the quick, quiet win they want.
Now that they have your address? Secure your perimeter. This is still a hunt.
ICE shows up at your home? DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Not even a crack. If they do not have a judicial warrant signed by a judge (not their internal ICE administrative form), they have no legal authority to enter. Speak through the closed door: “I do not consent to entry. I am not opening the door. I want a lawyer.” Refuse to sign anything. Do not believe the bluffs: “This will be easier if you cooperate,” “We’ll just come back with a warrant,” “We can do this the hard way.” They rely on intimidation and lies. Record the interaction safely if possible. Deny them compliance. Starve the hunt.
The hospital administration walked into the snare and let it close. Workers do not have to follow suit.
This is the time to organize and build defenses. Form coworker committees for mutual support. Pool resources for emergency legal funds. Demand that unions contest every single notice, file grievances, hold emergency meetings, rally public pressure. Run know-your-rights trainings in break rooms, parking lots, community spaces. Share hotline numbers constantly. They count on isolation to pick people off one by one. Unity turns the hunt against them.
