Liberty Reclaimed: Yasser Lopez Sosa Returns to the Field

The system met its match in federal court.

On a Friday afternoon in Mason Tennessee a judicial mandate shattered a bureaucratic wall. Yasser Lopez Sosa an eighteen year old high school student walked out of an ICE detention facility and back into his life. He had been held since February 20th.

Sosa is a student at Memphis Business Academy. He possesses zero criminal record. On the day of his detention, he was traveling in a vehicle on his way to a soccer game. ICE agents intercepted the vehicle; he was detained and transported to the Mason facility.

The legal pushback was swift and definitive. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman reviewed the case. Her ruling was precise: detaining Sosa without bond violated his fundamental liberty interest. She explicitly wrote that this interest cannot be casually tossed aside. The court ordered his immediate release.

The Release

The release met immediate resistance. Mauricio Calvo of Latino Memphis reported that facility officials stonewalled for hours, citing “missing paperwork” despite being presented with the federal court order. According to ABC24 Memphis, these administrative delays lasted until shortly after noon.

When the gates finally opened, Sosa emerged carrying a single folder. He was greeted with an emotional phone call to his mother, who had previously faced her own deportation struggles.

Moving Forward

Sosa’s objectives are now focused entirely on reclaiming his routine:

  • Academic Recovery: Returning to his classes at Memphis Business Academy.

  • Athletic Return: Rejoining his soccer teammates on the field.

He described feeling “good, happy, and strong”—a testament to a hard-fought victory that forced a federal agency to recognize his fundamental right to liberty.

His release should be celebrated

He is able to get back to being a young eighteen-year-old.

We must not become complacent,

Our watch is not over and the ledger must remain open.

West Tennessee Detention Center remains open

CoreCivic owns it.

Many more young adults remain ensnared

We must continue to keep our eyes on ICE.
