A Tabloid Hit Piece and a Caged Citizen

Free Speech is Under Attack in Summerville South Carolina

The selective prosecution of Dinah Chollet exposes exactly how the crackdown on dissent actually works.

On February 18, 2026, Dinah Chollet, co owner of The Knot Burger Pub in Summerville, South Carolina, turned herself in to police and was booked into the Dorchester County Detention Center. Her charge is contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Her crime, according to her own account, is that she told a group of teenagers she was proud of them for using their voices.

That is it. That is the arrest. She used her First Amendment right. Now she is sitting in a Summerville, South Carolina jail.

The Undercover Chat Raids

Before we look at the tabloid hit piece that fueled this arrest, we have to look at the surveillance apparatus.

In early February, students at Summerville High School organized a walkout to protest ICE enforcement policies. It was scheduled for February 20. They created a Snapchat group chat to organize.

A school resource officer joined that chat using a burner account to monitor it.

We must pause and ask a very serious question here. Why are school cops conducting undercover chat raids on high schoolers? Since when does a local school resource officer need a covert digital alias to infiltrate a student protest group? This is not counterterrorism. This is the policing of peaceful civic engagement. The infrastructure of surveillance has crept so far into our schools that cops are acting as undercover agents to monitor the political speech of teenagers.

What Actually Happened

Dinah Chollet also joined that chat. In her own words, posted publicly on Facebook on February 13, five days before her arrest, she explained her exact actions:

“When I joined, I told them I was proud of them for using their voices. I let them know we had their backs, and I directed them to a post that outlined the threats that had been made toward them so they would be aware and stay safe. After that, I left the chat. That is it.”

She was released on a $1,000 bond. Her first court appearance is April 14. She faces up to three years in prison and a $3,000 fine.

The Character of the Target

Dinah Chollet is not just a name on a police blotter. She is a recognized pillar in the Lowcountry. As the co owner of The Knot Burger Pub in Summerville, she has a long standing reputation for doing immense work for her community and loudly standing against prejudice and hate every single day.

She runs a business that feeds people and provides a safe, inclusive space for locals. She is the kind of adult who protects her neighbors. She builds community. The state targets people who build community.

The Tabloid Hit Piece and Muckraking

It did not help that an alt right publication acted as a beacon for silencing dissent. A known local right wing amplifier published a hit piece blaming Chollet for the students canceling their walkout. The county sheriff department ran with the narrative they built. They weaponized a local business owner’s solidarity to legitimize a police crackdown.

Journalistic integrity demands that facts lead when handling serious accusations and sensitive subject matter. Facts carry weight. Publishing satirical photos of a citizen exercising their First Amendment rights is not journalism. It is muckraking.

I will admit I am guilty of using satire on occasion. But it is only ever deployed when the facts of a situation are so inherently outlandish that mockery is the only logical response.

This bad actor knows exactly what they are doing. They are not simply defaming this woman. They are actively engineering reputational and financial damage against a local business. This is not journalism in any sense of the word. It is a targeted hit.

The Duality of Justice

The duality is louder than ever and it cannot be ignored.

Look at the national stage. When legitimate white nationalists are caught on a leaked Telegram chat spewing hate, discussing gas chambers, and calling Black people monkeys, Vice President JD Vance defends them. He goes on the record to say kids will be kids.

Those were thirty year old political operatives. [Citation: Vice President Vance dismisses leaked racist chats, October 2025].

But when a forty four year old woman tells high school students she is proud of their peaceful activism, an alt right blog demands she be caged, and the state complies. She is branded a criminal and thrown in a cell.

Solidarity Against the Chill

Dinah Chollet did not organize the walkout. Students did. She did not write violent messages. Other people did. She did not bring weapons to school. She encouraged kids to show up and use their voices. She promised that adults would stand beside them.

That promise, that adults would show up, is exactly what made her a target.

When community members stand visibly with young people who are protesting, it is harder for the state to dismiss the protest as just kids acting out. It becomes a community movement. It becomes harder to suppress.

The message sent by this arrest is clear. If you show up, if you lend your name and your presence and your encouragement to the vulnerable, you will be made an example of.

We at Eyes on ICE stand with the truth even if it does not fit within our beliefs, because echo chambers are where freedom goes to die. We stand in solidarity with Dinah Chollet and anyone targeted for exercising their civil rights.
